Greetings to everyone. We once more awoke to a beautiful Haitian morning. After a breakfast of corn flakes, bananas, homemade bread and cheese we headed down to the market. We did walk around among the masses of people and experienced the sights and sounds of their daily living. Seeing raw meat, fresh vegetables and so many people in such a small space was unusual for most of us.
At Hopital Lumiere, David, Nicole, and Joan resumed their duties of doing dressing changes. We have developed a good efficient system to compete this task because there are soooo many to do. Most of the men we serve are young males who usually have amputations, or severe injuries, relating to motorcycle crashes. We are finally starting to remember names and faces, and it is so wonderful to see their faces light up when they see us come into their rooms. (There is 8 patients in one room and we have 4 rooms to complete). Janella and Candace also worked hard with their patients on the internal medicine ward. They completed IV and foley catheter trays for the Haitian nurses to use, hopefully making their jobs easier. At times we are overwhelmed and feel very unproductive, but then a sudden smile or moment from one of the Haitians, help make all our efforts seem worthwhile.
Dr. Rudolph keeps Dorothy and Eric very busy and occupied in the OR and Clinic. Eric has the cardiac monitors and EKG machine up and running. So far this evening they have NOT had to go to surgery, which has been unusual for them.
Lanette and Dr. Schock are once more making rounds and seeing clinic patients. Right now Rich is back at the hospital, seeing patients and taking care of a little boy in the ER with croup. The children are just precious…
